Kenya’s Supreme Court has annulled last month’s election results and has called for fresh polls within 60 days.

Judge David Maranga, announcing the verdict of four out of the six judges said “The declaration (of Kenyatta’s win) is invalid, null and void,”

The election commission had declared incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta the winner by a margin of 1.4 million votes, but the Court said there were irregularities.

The ruling makes Kenya the first African country to have a presidential poll annulled by a court.

Reactions

Reacting to the Court’s decision, opposition presidential candidate Raila Odinga said: “This is a historic day for the people of Kenya and by extension for the people of the continent of Africa.”

Lawyer for President Kenyatta said the decision was “very political” but that they will respect the ruling.

 

Odinga’s supporters took to the streets to celebrate the ruling.
