Airbnb visitor numbers reach 1.2 million in Africa

Room-letting website, Airbnb says its visitor numbers to Africa have more than doubled to 1.2 million in September 2017. About 60% of bookings in the past year were made by millennials and 18% were made by families.

Presenting the latest figures in Johannesburg, Chris Lehane, Airbnb’s Global Head of Public Policy and Public Affairs, said: “Millennials in particular are looking for authentic and real experiences. They don’t want mass travel, they want the sort of healthy, sustainable, authentic and real travel.”

Inbound visitors to Africa jumped from 572,000 to 1.2 million in September, with South Africa leading in total guest arrivals, followed by Morocco.

Lehane said the firm will invest $1 million through 2020 to “promote and support community-led tourism projects in Africa.”
