Celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week in Africa: A quick guide to what is happening, where.

Every year in November, a week is dedicated to inspiring millions of people from more than 165 countries through local, national and global activities designed to help them unleash their potential as entrepreneurs and innovators. This year, the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW), which takes place from 13th to 19th November. It is the world’s largest gathering of innovators and entrepreneurs.

So how are entrepreneurs marking the week in Africa? 

Richard Branson Helps Open #GEW2017, First GEN Startup Campus in Africa

Global Entrepreneurship Week jumped off to an early start this year as Richard Branson, Virgin Group founder, helped launch the first-ever GEN startup campus in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 100,000 square foot campus — offering direct and virtual support services to startups — is the largest known such facility throughout the African continent. 

Minister of Business Development to launch Global Entrepreneurship Week Ghana 2017
The Minister of Business Development in Ghana, Mr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, announced the official commencement of Global Entrepreneurship Week in Accra on Monday, November 13. The week will celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship with a series of local and national signature events, including a Policy Forum on Women Economic Inclusion, Startup Weekend Accra, and much more.

GEN Sierra Leone Launches Country’s First Global Entrepreneurship Week Campaign

With 10 events in two cities for an expected 600 participants, Sierra Leone’s first ever Global Entrepreneurship Week celebration will feature discussions and workshops on three overarching themes: entrepreneurial culture, social entrepreneurship, and the intersection of digital technology, innovation and entrepreneurship education.  AYV TV – Sierra Leone’s most popular television station in the country – will cover the events.

 

Cameroon Celebrates 10 Years of Strengthening the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem through GEW

With less than three weeks until Global Entrepreneurship Week, organisers are preparing to launch their celebrations in more than 165 countries, and Cameroon is looking back on not only how GEW has evolved in the country, but also on how the movement has helped shape the local ecosystem. Gilles Lewat, founder and CEO of Youth Business Cameroon and host of Global Entrepreneurship Week in Cameroon, said the week-long celebration has become one of the best national entrepreneurship development campaigns in the country.

Kenya Celebrates 10 Years of Encouraging Youth Entrepreneurship Through GEW

With less than five weeks until the 10th anniversary of Global Entrepreneurship Week, countries are preparing to mobilize their communities for the celebration – and countries, like Kenya, that have been a part of the movement since its inception are reflecting on how much their GEW campaigns have evolved. John Wali, the Global Entrepreneurship Week Kenya lead organizer, is also the executive director of the Junior Achievement chapter in Kenya, which is the host organization of GEW Kenya.

Cape Verde Mobilizes Public, Private Sector Partnerships to Celebrate GEW 2016

During Global Entrepreneurship, held in November each year, nearly 10 million people celebrate entrepreneurship simultaneously across the globe – and Cape Verde mobilize more than 10,000 participants through activities, programs and its international entrepreneurship fair. Entrepreneur Bruno Barbosa, of the company Ideia that created a platform called TourCV, helped conduct a Startup Weekend program during the Week’s celebration. TourCV is an application that brings tourist news about Cape Verde Islands to the mobile platform. From traditional foods to the wilder attractions, local and international tourists can experience the country at their fingertips.
